Community Housing Network Wins 2011 Corrie Bair Building Inclusive Communities Award
Community Housing Network Receives Award from the Michigan Disability Rights Coalition
Honored with 2011 Corrie Bair Building Inclusive Communities Award
Community Housing Network was honored recently to receive the Corrie Bair Building Inclusive Communities Award from the Michigan Disability Rights Coalition (MDRC). The award was presented by MDRC executive director Norman G. DeLisle, Jr. at the April 12 awards luncheon of the 2011 Michigan Conference on Affordable Housing.
The Corrie Bair award is presented each year to an individual or organization that has made significant accomplishments in creating inclusive communities. CHN was given the award for its longstanding, effective work in creating inclusive, accessible housing for people with disabilities.
“We were very pleased to receive this award,” said Marc Craig, president of Community Housing Network. “Corrie Bair was a passionate disability rights advocate, and it is truly an honor to receive this award in her name. CHN is dedicated to living up to Corrie’s vision of inclusive communities for everyone, including those with disabilities."
Corrie Bair was an MDRC staff member who passed away in 2005. The Corrie Bair Building Inclusive Communities Award was created one year later, in order to continue her vision of a world without barriers for all of its citizens.
Since opening its doors in 2001, CHN has created more than 600 units of affordable housing for people with disabilities, including permanent supportive housing units. Most recently, the organization completed construction on four residences/12 units of housing that will serve as affordable rental housing for people with disabilities. The residences are located in Oakland County, in Ferndale and Hazel Park, and were created utilizing the HUD Section 811 Supportive Housing for Persons With Disabilities program.
