Provide Your Time & Services as a Volunteer

If you are looking for an opportunity to help people who are homeless and those with disabilities find long-term, successful housing, volunteering at Community Housing Network might be for you!

More than 300 volunteers gave approximately 1,500 hours of their time and talents to Community Housing Network last year.

Special volunteer opportunity: Please help us to to go green! The Community Housing Network office in Wayne, MI is looking for office volunteers for data entry assistance as described below:

Data Entry Specialist: This is an ongoing volunteer project that includes entering data from paper files onto spreadsheets and updating information in the database.

Imaging Specialist: In our efforts to create a green office environment, we are converting paper files to be stored in our database. We are looking for someone who can condense multiple files, scan and review them for quality, and deposit them into the appropriate electronic file.

If you are interested in either of these volunteer opportunities in Wayne, please contact Elizabeth Ramus at 248-928-0111 ext. 1366 or eramus@chninc.net . Thank you!

Additional volunteer opportunities:

Adopt A Family Program: A large number of volunteers are needed to find and log in donations, sort and wrap gifts, and/or deliver holiday packages to formerly homeless families during the holiday season. Worksites, individuals, schools, civic and faith-based organizations can help fill wish lists for families or individuals. They can also help by making a donation of cash or gift cards, new cleaning supplies and/or personal care products.

Events: Worksites and individuals can become event sponsors or donate quality auction items or experiences to Raise the Roof for Affordable Housing, CHN’s signature fundraising event held in the fall. Volunteers are also needed to serve on the event-planning committees whose work includes networking for sponsors, procuring auction items, and other event-related activities leading up to the event.

Third Party Events: Worksites, individuals, schools, civic and faith-based organizations can organize fundraising activites and events to benefit Community Housing Network. Examples include walks, home parties, fashion shows, etc. or on-site fundraisers like "jeans days" or luncheons. This is where you can get creative and do something fun, all while benefiting a great cause!

Community Projects: Teams of volunteers are sought to assist in the bi-annual homeless street counts and assemble outreach kits consisting of items such as socks, hygiene items and portable food. Volunteers are also needed to assist in updating CHN’s community housing database designed to link program participants to the most appropriate housing solutions based on their individual needs.

Administration: Volunteers are needed to help with mailings, clerical duties and errands.

Landscaping/Property Cleanup: Large groups of volunteers looking for short-term volunteer opportunities are needed to assist with spring and fall property cleanups or winter and summer yard maintenance (for example, snow removal and grass cutting).

Moving Assistance: Volunteers are sought who can assist formerly homeless program participants with moving into their new apartments.

Workshops: Professionals with special knowledge or skills are sought to give workshop presentations on financial literacy and other topics of interest to CHN peer advocates and Independent Living Club members.

Man finds success with supportive housing

Within days of being involved in a car accident, Ernest Houser, a professional boxer, experienced a seizure that caused him to fall and hit his head on the concrete. Life as he knew it changed completely. The fall left Ernest in a coma and when he awoke, he had no remembrance of his past. His mind was wiped clean, and he had to re-learn basic skills like walking, talking, reading and writing.   more
