Supportive Housing/Leasing Assistance Programs

Community Housing Network has several supportive housing or "leasing assistance" programs that provide affordable housing opportunities to people who are homeless and living with a disability. The programs provide monthly rental assistance and program-related supportive services to participants.

These programs are funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and administered by Community Housing Network.

To qualify, applicants must be "HUD-homeless" in Macomb County or Oakland County.

If you think you may qualify or would like more information, please call our Housing Resource Center at 248-928-0111 or toll-free at 866-282-3119.

CHN's Supportive Housing Programs: By the numbers

CHN is proud of its ability to maintain and grow its HUD-sponsored supportive housing/leasing assistance programs.

CHN Leasing Assistance Program facts:

  • We provide more than 380 units of affordable rental housing and comprehensive supportive services, including case management and connection to available mainstream resources, for people with disabilities and their families.
  • Among our 21 supportive housing program grants, we operate eight grants for people who are chronically homeless, providing scattered-site housing and intensive supportive services to 66 individuals. These are individuals who have repeatedly struggled with homelessness.
  • In fiscal year 2010, our supportive housing/leasing assistance programs provided housing-related services to 350 adults and children who were previously homeless, in need and living with a disability. In that same year, we helped 77 individuals and families successfully exit our supportive housing programs to move on to greater self-sufficiency.

Several years ago, CHN saw a need to better prepare prospective supportive housing/leasing assistance program participants for apartment living, and created "Renter Readiness Workshops.”  The workshops have been extremely effective in helping homeless participants with mental illness make a smoother transition from homelessness to housing. CHN has presented on the workshops to other organizations interested in this proactive approach.

Man finds success with supportive housing

Within days of being involved in a car accident, Ernest Houser, a professional boxer, experienced a seizure that caused him to fall and hit his head on the concrete. Life as he knew it changed completely. The fall left Ernest in a coma and when he awoke, he had no remembrance of his past. His mind was wiped clean, and he had to re-learn basic skills like walking, talking, reading and writing.   more
