Groundbreaking a huge success!

On June 11, we celebrated breaking ground on four new residences providing affordable housing for people with disabilities.

Close to 100 supporters, including elected officials, business community members, Community Housing Network board members and staff and others came out to join in the celebration.

State Senator Gilda Jacobs, Oakland County Commissioner Dave Coulter, Mary Griffiths from Oakland County Community Mental Health Authority and Marc Craig, Community Housing Network President and CEO spoke before the supportive crowd, who enjoyed fresh bagels and coffee donated by sponsors New York Bagel and Chazzano Coffee Roasters. Trevarrow ACE Hardware graciously provided shovels.

Others in attendance included staff from U.S. Congressman Sander Levin, U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow and U.S. Senator Carl Levin's offices. Staff from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Detroit office and the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) participated in the groundbreaking as well. The new constuction by Community Housing Network will create four houses/12 units ofaffordable housing (one house/3 units in Ferndale, and three houses/9 units in Hazel Park). O'Brien Construction Co. of Pontiac and Fusco, Shaffer and Pappas of Farmington Hills will serve as general contractor and architect, respectively.

During the ceremony, Jennifer Roosenberg of the Ferndale Area Chamber of Commerce presented a "Certificate of Vision" to Craig in recognition of Community Housing Network's investment and improvement to McDowell Street in Ferndale, where one of the houses will be built.

We are especially excited about this venture that represents the first new construction project for Community Housing Network -- previous construction projects have been rehabs of existing buildings.
